The Bundle of Sticks
By Aesop
A certain Father had a family of Sons, who were forever quarreling among themselves. No words he could say did the least good, so he cast about in his mind for some very striking example that should make them see that discord would lead them to misfortune.
One day when the quarreling had been much more violent than usual and each of the Sons was moping in a surly manner, he asked one of them to bring him a bundle of sticks. Then handing the bundle to each of his Sons in turn he told them to try to break it. But although each one tried his best, none was able to do so.
The Father then untied the bundle and gave the sticks to his Sons to break one by one. This they did very easily.
“My Sons,” said the Father, “do you not see how certain it is that if you agree with each other and help each other, it will be impossible for your enemies to injure you? But if you are divided among yourselves, you will be no stronger than a single stick in that bundle.”
In unity is strength.
Moral of the Story:
The story of “The Bundle of Sticks” teaches us a very important lesson about the power of working together. A father had sons who always argued and fought with each other. No matter what the father said, the sons continued to quarrel. So, the father decided to show them a lesson in a different way.
One day, the father asked his sons to bring him a bundle of sticks. He gave the bundle to each son and asked them to try and break it. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t break the bundle. Then, the father untied the bundle and gave each son a single stick to break. The sons found that breaking a single stick was very easy.
The father then explained to his sons that when the sticks were together in a bundle, they were strong and couldn’t be broken. But when the sticks were separated, they were weak and could be broken easily. He told his sons that if they worked together and helped each other, they would be strong and no one could harm them. But if they kept fighting and stayed divided, they would be weak and easy to defeat.
This story teaches children that unity and teamwork make us strong. When we support and help each other, we can overcome any challenge. But if we argue and fight, we become weak. So, it’s important to work together and stay united. Remember, in unity there is strength.
